Campus Security Authority Overview

Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) are at the core of campus safety under the Clery Act. Because not all crimes are reported to Police, the Clery Act requires other campus staff, volunteers, and contractors, defined as Campus Security Authorities (CSAs), which are individuals that by virtue of their role with UC Merced, are required to take action when crimes are reported to them.

A CSA encompasses four groups of individuals and organizations associated with UCM. Employees whose job functions fall into one of the following categories are designated as CSAs.

  1. Campus Police Department employees.
  2. Employees who have responsibility for campus security but who do not constitute a campus police department.
  3. Employees to whom students and employees may report criminal offenses.
  4. Officials with significant responsibility for student and campus activities.

For assistance with determining which employees are CSAs, see CSA Identification for Supervisors.
